Your questions about freezer burn
Is uncooked meat still good if it is freezer burnt?
Freezer burnt is a bit of an odd term as freezing removes heat and a burn is cause be heat. Actually, water is removed from the meat under freezing conditions. But when the water freezes, it expands and breaks the cell walls (which is one way the water escapes). And when things loose their moisture, they dry out (or dehydrate…the drying out process that went to college and got a PhD).
So in the words of Vern the turtle in “Over the Hedge”…hmm, a bit chewy, but high in fiber.
Taste is subjective, so I won’t go there.
I just recall some stories about a prince being pursued by evil doing relatives and forced into poverty and starvation. A poor old lady takes him in and shares her meager food with him. As poor as the food was, he relished the delicious flavor. Later when he prevails and becomes a good king, he seeks out the old lady and rewards her by bringing her to the palace and giving her a job as the personal cook for his meals. “I want you to cook the same food that I ate on the first day we met,” he requested. When the meal was served, he almost choked on it and spat it out….”That tastes terrible. It can’t be the same food.” “It is,” replied the old woman. “But on that day you were starving.”
So…who wants some freezer burnt BBQ ribs?

can freezer burn on food make you sick if you eat it?
not as far as I know, might taste a bit different but I have eaten it. Then again I do have an iron stomach lol I can eat anything, I was in the military after all! lol
I put some frozen scallops (from Schwans) in the fridge last night to thaw for tonight’s dinner. However, they appear to be slightly freezer burned. How can we tell if they’re ok to use?
Renee, this is a question that comes up quite often. As you may know freezer burn is actually just the drying out of the surface of a food from being in a freezer for too long uncovered. (the humidity in a freezer is nearly zero). So from a microbiological standpoint there is nothing that can hurt you. The food is completely safe.
Now, having said that. The food probably has been in the freezer for a while and time is the enemy of good flavor so the scallops might not taste real great. Also freezer burn causes a change in texture in the dried out area so there the texture might not be too great. But go ahead and try them you will not get sick. As always uses some common sense when dealing with questionable food.

does food taste bad if it has freezer burn on it? is it ok to eat some pork chops that have freezer burn?
Tough and dried out, but safe to eat.
Freezer burn is food that has had all the moisture sucked out of it by exposure to the air while in the freezer. It takes months and months of improper storage in the freezer for it to happen. – the meat will appear grey in the freezer burned spots.
Some people confuse freezer burn with frost. Frost can normally appear on frozen food as it is from the humidity in the air freezing.
What does freezer burn on chicken look like?
The chicken that I have is frozen and is pink still but it has some white spots or areas on it. I know that if there is ice growing on it that is a sign but the chicken comes like that, they call it iced glazed. Is the white spots freezer burn?? And can I eat it if it does have freezer burn?
The white spots could be freezer burn but you may be seeing the difference between the fat and the meat too. Freezer burn will not hurt you, it just makes the food more tasteless or changes the texture (dries it out a bit.)
The longer it’s been in the freezer, and how it was wrapped before freezing determine the amount of freezer burn. I say just cook it and cut off or don’t eat what you don’t want.
